Sailing Solo in Search of an Endless Sunrise

Posted on July 20, 2019

At the beginning of August, I am sailing solo across the Pacific Ocean from San Diego to Hawaii. It is one of the longest ocean passages in the world, with nothing but a wilderness of waves between the land. The Pacific was named by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and it means "peaceful," which makes …

The most wind I have seen on the water is 55 knots The most wind I have seen on the water is 55 knots, but still whenever the wind makes a shift it takes some adjusting inside of me to feel comfortable with it's new condition. It's as if it's the first time I'm seeing such a condition.

I just had my 57th sunrise alone at sea on my way I just had my 57th sunrise alone at sea on my way from Vanuatu to the Solomon Islands. 💕☀️I am scared all the time out at sea. My heart was like some magic jumping bean and my stomach was all tornado twisted before I left Vanuatu. I don't know why. It wasn't even a long sail- only 200 some odd nautical miles. I suppose it's because you never really know what your gonna get out on the water and you just gotta be prepared for anything. Anyway, when I'm all twisted in my head out there and the sea seems like a monster that wants to murder me and I just want to give up, I say to myself "Olivia, just make it to the next sunrise and then see how you feel." And I always feel 100 percent better by the next sunrise.

1- Me at sunrise somewhere at sea

2- The sun somewhere at sea. Either rising or falling I can't tell which.

There is a man standing on top of a stick tower, 3 There is a man standing on top of a stick tower, 30 meters high, arms wide, wearing only his namba (that’s a pee-pee sheath, honey). He’s covered in coconut oil & there are men tying liana vines to his ankles. Behind the stick tower a hundred namba-clad men & women in grass skirts are singing & dancing. The sun is a stinging blinding thing & I squint to see it all. My head ping-pongs around from the dancers to the man on the tower. It’s all so ancient & sizzling. We are on top of a jungle mountain, the sky is yellow, the land is green, & when I look way down at the blue of Homo Bay I can see my boat, like a needle in a dream. The tower that the man is standing on represents a human body; head, shoulders, breasts, belly, genitals, & knees. The singing gets more frenzied. The singers are hooting. This is the rush before the rush, which makes it it’s own rush. Dopamine floods. The man is standing at the tower's edge, his legs laced in vines, he claps his hands, he spreads them wide, & hoots back “huay, huay.” I feel like the foundation of my reality is receding on the horizon. What is this strange planet on this mountain top wrapped in grass? The dancers heighten their motions, feet are moving left and right, leaves waving, the hooting keeps hooting. There is a fever. There is the sun, burning. There is a warped shaking. There is the edge of a moment that feels like everything feels when it’s about to burst open & be something new & wilder than it was before. The air is untamed & tenuous, but there is an order to it that I don’t comprehend because I’m not from this planet. The man on the tower beats his chest, he is a warrior born too big for the bug world beneath him. I see his breath pulsing in & out of his oil-covered body. Then, in a blink- a flash- a blip, he jumps, head first towards the earth. Like rain he falls at 45 miles per hour. There is a snapping sound. His body hits the ground. Members of his tribe rush to lift him off the dirt. He stands. He has survived. His yam harvest will be bountiful. This is land diving on Pentecost island.

Home is where the water is. Here are some portrait Home is where the water is. Here are some portraits of me captured while sailing my 34 ft. home to another country.

1- me in the cockpit letting the sea and sun seep into my head like a drug.

2- here I am putting in the first reef on the mainsail. When you reef a sail, you are reducing the area of sail. In higher winds this gives the boat more stability.

3-Me out here looking for you.

4- Here I am trimming the genoa at sunrise

5-The interior of my seashell has rainbows and wind-chimes and lots of books in it.

6- Me at 4 AM waking up to fix the lazy sheet which is caught on something on deck and is making more noise than a thousand cats in a bag.

7- The first instrument you see shows my boat speed through the water. The second instrument shows the wind speed and angle.
