The Pirates Of The Caribbean

Posted on January 20, 2020

I was just sailing down in the British Virgin Islands along with all the pirates of the Caribbean. At one point there was threat of mutiny, but I won’t get into that just yet. It was the week of New Years and the world was a blur of fireworks and calypso and liquid painkillers and …

I am a woman ruled by the moon, just like the sea, I am a woman ruled by the moon, just like the sea, and when I’m offshore I have as many moods as she does. 🌙 Here are various scenes of me offshore in all of my moodiness.

1-Jibing when the wind is chill. I set my windvane on the other side, unlock my helm, jibe with the wheel, release the working jib sheet, crank in the lazy.

2- I turn my cabin into a disco sometimes

3- Shaking my reef

4- Crying because the sunset is so beautiful

5- Babe, this is where I sleep when I’m underway

6- This is what I look like when I haven’t slept and I’ve been hand steering for 36 hours.

7- On calm days I can sloth around in the cockpit with a blanket and a book

8- When I have a lot of built up energy, I shake around like a shaker

9- Juniper charging through the sea

10- I get lonely at sea, I miss human voices the most

Cyclone Judy & Kevin kicked up the sky as they ble Cyclone Judy & Kevin kicked up the sky as they blew past Fiji. This is what I wrote when Judy came & I was on a mooring in Musket Cove: There is heartache in the wind, the sky is made of stones & my boat is a foreign planet. The edges of Cyclone Judy are thrashing all around and Cyclone Kevin is hot to trot on her tail. Judy has worked her way up to a category 4 and I’m clinging onto a mooring ball in Musket Cove, trying hard not to blow away. The atmosphere is untamed, ferocious, precarious- like an escaped criminal coming at you, and the wind has been screaming at us so hard that nobody has left their boats for two days straight.

On top of it all there are squalls and when they come it’s like I’m riding a bucking beast in a blizzard. Everything shakes- the wind howls, the rain daggers, the world goes whiteout, the birds sing a mad song, and my planet flies and jerks and twists. Everything feels and sounds like it’s on the verge of breaking, even me. I mean like my little bimini looks as if it’s about to rip right off and my dinghy keeps flipping over on it’s side and I’d be a fat liar if I told you that I’m not scared of the squalls, I’m freaking terrified. I miss the smell of dry earth and long for the glow of stars and I don’t know if I can endure another night of these squalls alone. I’m considering hiring someone form the village, perhaps the son of a chief, to sleep onboard.

1- Cyclone Kevin spinning past Fiji
2- Juniper shaking in a squall captured by @sailingnv
3- Me lying on the settee & burying my head in Barbarian Days
4- Squall as seen from my cockpit
5- Me on the radio responding to a weather report from the man who manages the moorings in Musket Cove
6- Sometimes I feel like a hermit crab hiding out in my little seashell
7- The rain hitting hard
8- I got hit by a big wave when I sailed in between cyclones from Musket cove over to Denarau. It popped cabinets and drawers open & my knifes went everywhere

Hi y’all. I’m finally editing 3 1/2 years of s Hi y’all. I’m finally editing 3 1/2 years of sailing footage. In 2019, @samholmessailing and I both sailed solo from California to Hawaii, me on a 34 ft. boat and him on a 23 ft. We met up in the Ala Wai Harbor on Oahu and sailed together over to Kauai aboard Juniper. Along the way we talked about our transpacific crossings, cooked, had a bowline tying contest, made music out of plumbing pipes, talked to a sea lion, and explored the bay of Hanalei. Here are some scenes from the journey. Watch the whole adventure on my YouTube channel (link in bio). I’ll be posting a new video next week of me doing a month load of boat projects to prepare for my sail to French Polynesia.

1- Me & Sam chatting about our journeys
2-Hard on the wind
3-Making noise out of my spare plumping pipes
4- Me talking about my fears
5- Dancing on anchor in Kuai
6- The bowling tying contest
7-chilling in the saloon
8- Shampoo Ginger- you can clean all of your bits with this plant
9- Me cleaning my bits while underway and I obviously don’t know the words to that song
10- Sam and I both made friends with a lot of seabirds

I’ve seen the sun set and rise a total of 50 tim I’ve seen the sun set and rise a total of 50 times while sailing alone in the middle of the ocean. I don’t think I’m going to get to the end of my life and regret that. Do what you dream to do. And remember, nobody has to believe in your dream but you! 🌈 ☀️ #sailinginstagram #sailingoffshore #sunsetlovers #sunsets #pacificocean #southpacific
I have this reoccurring dream that my boat, Junip I have this reoccurring dream that my boat, Juniper, ends up on shore & I spend the whole dream dragging her back to sea. Sometimes her anchor breaks, sometimes she sails onto land, sometimes she is just there & I don’t know how she got there. Lately, in my dreamland, she has been on Namotu Island next to a bunch of fish bones. In other dreams Juniper has ended up in Arkansas, in forests, deep in the dirt next to the mud bugs, in outer space, in a parking lot full of dumpsters, and the oddest- a bank drive through. Anyway, I pull Juniper back to sea & I pass other people, but nobody lifts a gosh darn finger they just smile & stare as if to say you chose this life sweetheart now suck it up. So I pull & pull & pull until Juniper is floating on blue crystals & I wake up. Anyway owning a boat is totally haunting my subconscious, cause the truth is that living the sailing dream is not always dreamy. There are ups & downs & sometimes you want to fling yourself overboard. And it’s expensive, lord is it expensive. And it’s work, sailing is work, lots of work. Last week, I busted my knee, fried my fridge compressor, cooked my engine starter battery, and got hit by the massive wake of a ferry which broke the tiller off my new outboard and gouged a bunch of holes into my fiberglass. And my boat is like an extension of me, like a third arm or a second head, so all that breaking about broke me. But it’s a new week & I’m gonna fix all that broke & drag my boat back to sea like I do in my dreams, because living among the sunsets & the rainbows & the wind & the waves & the fish is worth every down that crashes my way.

1- Namotu Island- not a bad place to shipwreck in your dreams
2- Me, on the sand, dreaming
3- My seashell can sail real good as long as I can keep her floating
4- I get high on rainbows, babe
5- I get high on sunsets too, bro
6- I get the highest on fish, yo
7- Part of my broken compressor
8- Sometimes I think the saltwater wants to eat me & Junie
9- Keep puffing on that dream, oh and hey check out the Navajo sand art on the wall behind me

I’m in the midst of getting Juniper ready to set I’m in the midst of getting Juniper ready to set sail after cyclone season in Fiji passes. My plan is to head to Vanuatu, the Solomon’s, and onto Indonesia. I end for ended all of my lines before I left San Diego, so now I’m replacing all of them. This line in my hand will be a new reefing line. Beyond changing out all the running rigging I’m doing a boatload of other things. Below is my list: 1- Re-galvanize anchor chain
2- Tune Standing Rigging
3 - Finish varnishing the wood
4- Install tri-light
5- New LCD screens for instruments
6- Replace glass on hatches
7- Rebed stanchions
8- Fix deck-to-hull joint
9- Make a Whisker Pole
