Sailing Solo in Search of an Endless Sunrise

Posted on July 20, 2019

At the beginning of August, I am sailing solo across the Pacific Ocean from San Diego to Hawaii. It is one of the longest ocean passages in the world, with nothing but a wilderness of waves between the land. The Pacific was named by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and it means "peaceful," which makes …

I’m in the midst of getting Juniper ready to set I’m in the midst of getting Juniper ready to set sail after cyclone season in Fiji passes. My plan is to head to Vanuatu, the Solomon’s, and onto Indonesia. I end for ended all of my lines before I left San Diego, so now I’m replacing all of them. This line in my hand will be a new reefing line. Beyond changing out all the running rigging I’m doing a boatload of other things. Below is my list: 1- Re-galvanize anchor chain
2- Tune Standing Rigging
3 - Finish varnishing the wood
4- Install tri-light
5- New LCD screens for instruments
6- Replace glass on hatches
7- Rebed stanchions
8- Fix deck-to-hull joint
9- Make a Whisker Pole

It’s rate of locomotion is 8.1 centimeters per minute. I helped this one get back to the water on a low tide. If your gonna touch one, keep it underwater, without the sea they die.

Sailing Solo In Search Of An Endless Sunrise ☀️

My dream of setting sail always dripped with the hot nectar of romance. It involved me and some handsome fella who could take care of all of the electrical and mechanical s***, while I made the sails dance in the wind. I have been so obsessed with this idea that seven years ago I broke up with a lover because he had no interest in sailing. Since then, I have had a string of boyfriends who sail, from 3D gun-slinging Republicans, to pirates who stole my jewels, to gypsies who floated in a hazy shade of reality. For my love of sailing and the pursuit of a sailing companion, I was able to ignore the obvious signs of incompatibility and even willing to bend myself into impossible shapes to keep that toxic flame burning.

Still I held onto the dream.

I was supposed to sail to Hawaii this summer with my most recent Romeo—but a few months ago our love affair exploded and I found myself about to turn 37, partnerless, and living on a boat still shackled to land. I realized that even though I had over 10 years of sailing experience and my 50 ton captain’s license, my romantic notions of sailing with a mate were built on the fact that I didn’t have the self-confidence nor self-trust to do the repairs that go along with sailing. I realized that in my quest to fill this sailing partner void I had sacrificed self-love. I realized that there was nothing getting in the way of my dream, but me, and I wasn’t going to let another year drag by in search of that perfect someone to sail off into the sunset with. So I decided to cross the Pacific alone…..

It’s been raining buckets over here in Fiji and It’s been raining buckets over here in Fiji and you can’t even see your own toes. That black box mounted in front of me on the helm is my chart plotter. That’s how I know where I’m the hey-hey I am when it’s all white out like this. I just created an Amazon list of all the gear that I use for offshore sailing on my website. Check it out. 💋

Hi Sunshines. I just finished recording season 1 o Hi Sunshines. I just finished recording season 1 of the Wilderness of Waves podcast! There will be new episodes every week (link in bio). It’s me reading all of my log entries from my solo crossing from California to Hawaii. I make all sorts of mistakes, and break my engine, and have to sail without navigational lights, and hallucinate a jazz singer clapping in my v-berth, and fall in love with a booby and make the massive mistake of having to sail 20 NM close-hauled in the trades all because I didn’t want to hove-to. Come get inside my head and swim around, I promise you won’t drowned.

1. Me offshore in the North Pacific on a windless day. Captured by a merman who swam by
2. Me in the cockpit
3. Sunsets are cool man
4. My mainsail has a panda on it, you dig?
5. That’s the view of my cabin as seen from the companionway steps. My boat, Juniper, is 34 ft.
6. I hate sailing to weather. Look at this mess!
7. “Hopefully it’s not too bad!“
